During the middle school and high school years, we spend a lot of time as parents and caregivers thinking “I wish they played with toys…”

Not only for nostalgia but because it was less expensive! As we spend money on these “toys” we should be thinking about safety, though. Along with some key activity and toy safety considerations for older kids and teens, here are some of our top safe toy choices for this gift giving season.

Safety Considerations

Keep small pieces away from little brothers and sisters. The older our kids get, the smaller the toy pieces seem to get. Make sure they keep them out of reach of little brothers and sisters and pets, too.

Some of the activities this age group may be interested in can involve paints and glues. Teach them to use them in well ventilated spaces or outside.

If they have bikes, scooters and skateboards, be sure that your child wears a helmet and other appropriate safety protection. It might not seem “cool”, but it is “safe” and that is more important.

If they have electronic devices and computers, consider keeping them in open spaces of your home rather than in their bedrooms. Not because the object itself is unsafe but because the internet can be an unsafe place. This allows you to more easily monitor what your child is doing and who they are engaging with online. Do they have headphones? Over the ear are a safer bet than ear buds, but either way, make sure they know the dangers of having the volume too loud when listening to music or talking to friends.

At this age, they may be more inclined to build or make their own toys! Be sure they know how to safely handle tools of all sorts including soldering tools, power tools, 3D printers, and the like. Take the time to read through the directions with them and make sure they have eye protection, gloves, and other safety gear as required.
